    The Water That Learned Us

The first voice comes from a flooded culvert. It belongs to Tessa Vale.

Tessa returns to Bellwether, an abandoned Queensland cane settlement, after illegal pump tests send oxygen-starved water towards a coastal wetland. The drains should be empty. The pumps should be isolated. But running water repeats what it hears—and the narrower its path, the more human it becomes.

As monsoon rain closes every road, Tessa and six others retreat through the drowned remains of the mill. Each pipe carries a borrowed voice. Each repeated pump cycle teaches the water a route it should not be able to follow. When the old drainage network begins assembling bodies from floodwater, blood and cane fibre, the group must decide what can be saved: the town’s archive, the land beneath it, or the straight channels that have kept Bellwether dry for a century.

Stopping the pumps will not be enough. To survive, they must undo the shape the town forced on the floodplain—and accept what widening the water will cost.
